WESTPORT - Mark Amatrudo is poised to join the Westport Fire Department as interim deputy chief pending Board of Selectmen approval.
The selectmen will take up appointing Amatrudo during its meeting on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Fire Chief Christopher Ackley said Amatrudo would start immediately after the selectmen approved his contract.
He said he wants to embark on an administrative overhaul at the department, and Amatrudo would assist him in that work.
Included in the things he would assist the officers in completing, Ackley said, are creating a strategic plan for the department, review and update policies, assist in officer training and create a long-term capital improvement plan.
“There are things we have talked about doing, but the daily operation of the department always takes over,” he said. “His mission is to help us excel.”
Ackley, who was promoted from deputy chief to chief last spring, said by the time Amatrudo completes his work he will be ready to promote a permanent deputy chief from within the department’s ranks.
Amatrudo has done consultant work with the Wallingford Fire Department and the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association.
He has also served as a fire instructor with the state’s Commission on Fire Prevention and Control.
